Lebanon laid down the catwalk to bring a first fashion week to the Middle East, vaunting European and local designers already involved in the world of haute couture, and young models notably from the Ukraine and Hungary.
Called "Fashion trends", the event gave designers chance to show off their creations to Lebanon's growing numbers of tourists from the Arab world, now -- after the events and allied suspicions of September 11 -- often seeking relaxation closer at home.
Local designer Georges Hobeika, who has presented his collections in Paris for the past eight seasons, kicked of the fashion week being held in a major Beirut hotel.
His collections merged the seasons, with winter clothes showing gentle colours blended with primitive materials, young models wearing lacy and transparent skirts, and soft pastel gowns.
